Wo am Herd ein Brautpaar siedelt,
Seid auf eurer Hut, ihr Knaben,
Wahrt, ihr Mädchen, euer Herz!

Denn am Morgen, denn am Mittag
Wie ein Duft von wilden Rosen
Schwebt die Glut verstohlner Küsse
Dort bezaubernd in den Lüften.
Ach, und wenn der Abend dunkelt,
Unverhüllt durch die Gemächer
Wandelt mit geschwungner Fackel
Eros dann, und unablässig
Sprühn der Sehnsucht irre Funken
Weiterzündend um ihn her.

Wo am Herd ein Brautpaar siedelt,

Leise Lieder sing ich dir bei Nacht,
Lieder, die kein sterblich Ohr vernimmt,
Noch ein Stern, der etwa spähend wacht,
Noch der Mond, der still im Äther schwimmt;

Denen niemand als das eigne Herz,
Das es träumt, in tiefer Wehmut lauscht,
Und an denen niemand als der Schmerz,
Der sie zeugt, sich kummervoll berauscht.

Leise Lieder sing ich dir bei Nacht,
Dir, in deren Aug mein Sinn versank,
Und aus dessen tiefem, dunklem Schacht,
Meine Seele ew'ge Sehnsucht trank.

Zum Schlummer lädt am Waldessaum.

O Palme, schöner als wie je gewußt,

O Welle, sanfter als je belauscht,
Und wir entschlafen tief berauscht.

Als uns das erste süße Morgenrot
Am Himmel den milden Gruß entbot,
Von der Insel her ein Glockenspiel
Selig plaudernd in unsern Dämer fiel.

Du tiefes Glück!

Leise lächelnd ins unbekannte Land!

mich so von Herzen kränke,
weint stumm die Weide mit.
