by Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875)
Translation by Adelbert von Chamisso (1781 - 1838)

Tyveknægten
Language: Danish (Dansk)
Our translations:  FRE
I vuggen ligger det spæde nor,
det sover så trygt og stille;
moderen læser et fadervor,
en engel hun ser i den lille.

Ømt hun kysser hans runde kind
og glemmer hver jordisk smerte,
drømmer så sødt i fremtid ind;
så drømmer hvert moderhjerte.

Men ravnen kommer med al sin slægt,
og synger bag ruden sin vise:
"Din engel bliver en tyveknægt,
og vi skal engelen spise!"

Muttertraum
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Danish (Dansk)
Our translations:  CAT DUT ENG FRE
Die Mutter betet herzig und schaut
  Entzückt auf den schlummernden Kleinen;
Er ruht in der Wiege so sanft, so traut,
  Ein Engel muß er ihr scheinen.

Sie küßt ihn und herzt ihn; sie hält sich kaum,
  Vergessen der irdischen Schmerzen;
Es schweift in der Zukunft ihr Hoffnungstraum;
  So träumen Mütter im Herzen.

Der Rab' indeß mit der Sippschaft sein
  Kreischt draußen am Fenster die Weise:
Dein Engel, dein Engel wird unser sein!
  Der Räuber dient uns zur Speise!
