Русалка плыла по реке голубой, Озаряема полной луной; И старалась она доплеснуть до луны Серебристую пену волны. И шумя и крутясь, колебала река Отраженные в ней облака; И пела русалка - и звук её слов Долетал до крутых берегов. И пела русалка: ,,На дне у меня Играет мерцание дня; Там рыбок златые гуляют стада; Там хрустальные есть города; И там на подушке из ярких песков Под тенью густых тростников Спит витязь, добыча ревнивой волны, Спит витязь чужой стороны. Расчесывать кольца шелковых кудрей Мы любим во мраке ночей, И в чело и в уста мы в полуденный час Целовали красавца не раз. Но к страстным лобзаньям, не зная зачем, Остаётся он хладен и нём; Он спит - и, склонившись на перси ко мне, Он не дышит, не шепчет во сне!`` Так пела русалка над синей рекой, Полна непонятной тоской; И, шумно катясь, колебала река Отраженные в ней облака.

A water nymph swimming in the blue river, Illuminated by the full moon, Attempted to splash the moon from afar With a foaming wave of silvery sheen. Turbulently swirling, the river cradled The clouds that on its flow it mirrored; And the water nymph sang—her voice Carried to the steep river banks. And the water nymph sang: “In my realm down below Plays the flickering daytime glow, Schools of golden fishes masquerading everywhere; And cities of crystal are there.” Down there below, on a cushion of bright sand, Shaded by densely growing reed, Sleeps a knight, prey to the jealous waves, This knight of another realm sleeps. To comb his rings of silky curls Is our pleasure in the darkness of nights, And at the midday hour more than once Has this handsome knight felt our caress. But our passionate kiss—why he knows not— Leaves him all cold and mute; He sleeps—and, over my breast leaning on me, Neither breathe, nor whisper in his sleep does he!” Thus the water nymph above the blue river sang on, In oblivious yearning on and on; Turbulently swirling, the river cradled The clouds that in its flow were mirrored.
