I wander thro' the gateway, when shades of evening gloam, unto the ancient graveyard, where sleep the great of Rome. From hate and love they slumber, from earthly joys and glooms, far on the Appian roadway within their marble tombs. Fair gleams yon tow'r, when sunset's last rays in glory shine, Cecilia Metella, on thy majestic shrine. I stand amid its ruins, my glances northward turn, and flancy bears my thoughts afar unto the land I mourn. I know a tower yonder, not built with proud design, where from a vine-clad window looks forth sweet lady mine.
