Tiepida e azzurra è la notte, e infinita la calma. Avvolto nel suo mantello, la testa appoggiata su un sasso, dorme Giuseppe, dal cuore puro, dopo avere recitato le sue preghiere, e l'asino ai suoi piedi sta come un umile amico. Ai piedi della Sfinge appoggiata appena, la Vergine pallida e dolce ha socchiuso gli occhi; E, nell'oscurità una luce strana e soave Viene dal piccolo Gesù che dorme fra le sue braccia. Attorno a loro dorme il deserto, pieno di mistero. E tutto è così tranquillo in quest'ora e in questi luoghi che si può sentire il respiro del bimbo dietro i suoi veli. Non c'è un alito di vento ... Il fumo immobile sale dal fuoco in sottile colonna e si perde nell'aria azzurra... E la sfinge eterna chiama a testimoni le stelle.
