Ich armes Käuzlein kleine,
Wo soll ich fliegen aus,
Bei Nacht so gar alleine,
Bringt mir so manchen Graus
Das macht der Eulen Ungestalt
Ihr Trauern mannigfalt.

Ich wills Gefieder schwingen,
Gen Holz in grünen Wald,
Die Vögel hören singen,
In mancherlei Gestalt
Vor allen lieb' ich Nachtigall,
Vor allen liebt' mich Nachtigall.

Die Kinder unten glauben,
Ich deute Böses an,
Sie wollen mich vertreiben
Das ich nicht schreien kann
Wenn ich was deute tut's mir leid,
Und was ich schrei' ist keine Freud'.

Mein Ast ist mir entwichen,
Darauf ich ruhen sollt',
Sein Blättlein all' verblichen,
Frau Nachtigall geholt
Das schafft der Eulen falsche Tück,
Die störet all mein Glück.

Ik, uiltje, arm en nietig,
Waar moet ik vliegen heen,
Alléén 's nachts en verdrietig;
Het geeft mij veel geween.
Een uil is vies en altijd fout,
't Geeft treurnis menigvoud¹.
 
Ik wil mijn vleugels uitslaan
Naar 't bos, het groene woud,
De vogels horen losgaan,
Zo ongelijk gebouwd.
Ik hou het meest van de² nachtegaal,
Van mij houdt meest de nachtegaal.
 
De kind'ren, onder, klagen
Dat ik het kwaad aanbreng;
Zij willen mij verjagen,
Mijn kreet vinden zij eng.
Als ik wat aanbreng spijt het mij,
En mijn gekrijs maakt mij niet blij.
 
Mijn tak is mij ontnomen,
Waarop ik rusten zou,
Zijn blad is bleek volkomen,
Weg de³ nachtegalenvrouw.
Wij uilen staan in kwade reuk,
't Vernietigt mijn geluk.
