Окончен праздный, шумный день; Людская жизнь, умолкнув, дремлет. Все тихо. Майской ночи тень Столицу спящую объемлет. Но сон от глаз моих бежит, И при лучах иной денницы Воображение вертит Годов утраченных страницы. Как будто вновь, вдыхая яд Весенних, страстных сновиденний, В душе я воскрешаю ряд Надежд, порывов, заблуждений... Увы, то призраки одни! Мне скучно с мертвой их толпою, И шум их старой болтовни Уже не властен надо мною. Лишь тень одна из всех теней Явилась мне, дыша любовью, И, верный друг минувших дней, Склонилась тихо к изголовью. И смело отдал ей одной Всю душу я в слезе безмолвной, Никем незримой, счастья полной... В слезе, давно хранимой мной!

Beendet ist der leere, laute Tag; Menschliches Leben, verstummend, schlummert ein. Alles ist still. Der Schatten der Mainacht umarmt die schlafende Hauptstadt. Aber der Schlaf flieht meine Augen. Und, beim Erstrahlen einer anderen Morgenröte, blättert die Phantasie die Seiten der verschwendeten Jahre um. Als ob ich von neuem das Gift der frühlingshaften, leidenschaftlichen Traumbilder atmend, in der Seele eine Reihe von Hoffnungen, Ausbrüche, Irrtümer erweckte... Ach was, das sind nur Gespenster! Mich langweilt ihre tote Zahl, und der Lärm ihres alten Geredes hat keine Macht mehr über mich. Nur ein Schatten, einer von allen, erschien mir, Liebe atmend, teuer Freund vergangener Tage, beugte sich still zum Kopfende. Und kühn gab ich ihm alleine die ganze Seele in einer sprachlosen Träne, von niemandem gesehen, voller Glück in der Träne, die ich lang bewahrte.

В тумане дремлет ночь. Безмолвная звезда Сквозь дымку облаков мерцает одиноко. Звенят бубенцами уныло и далеко Коней пасущихся стада. Как ночи облака, изменчивые думы Несутся надо мной, тревожны и угрюмы; В них отблески надежд, когда-то дорогих, Давно потерянных, давно уж не живых. В них сожаления... и слёзы. Несутся думы те без цели и конца, То, превратясь в черты любимого лица, Зовут, рождая вновь в душе былые грёзы: То, слившись в черный мрак, полны немой угрозы Грядущего борьбой пугают робкий ум, И слышится вдали. Im Nebel schlummert die Nacht. Schweigender Stern, Der einsam durch den Wolkenschleier flimmert. Die Zügelglocken der Herde weidender Pferde klingeln schwermütig und weit entfernt. Wie nächtliche Wolken jagen unstete Gedanken aufregend und finster über mich hin. In ihnen spiegeln sich Hoffnungen, die, einst teuer, lange verloren und lange schon nicht mehr lebendig sind. In ihnen Bedauern und Tränen. Die Gedanken eilen ohne Ziel und Ende, mal sich in Züge des geliebten Gesichts wandelnd, das, wiedergeboren, in der Seele frühere Trugbilder hervorruft, mal verschmelzen sie in schwarzer Dunkelheit, voll stummer Drohung künftigen Kampfes, und schrecken den zaghaften Geist, und von weitem ertönt der Lärm des chaotischen Lebens, das seelenlose Gelächter der Menge, tückisches Hassgeflüster, Alltagskleinigkeiten, nicht zu erstickendes Getuschel; traurige Totenglocke. Stern, wie ein Vorbote voller Scham, verbirgst du dein helles Antlitz im freudlosen Nebel, wie meine Zukunft, stumm und undurchschaubar.

Nachdenklicher Mond, weite Sterne, vom blauen Himmel spiegeln sie sich im Wasser. Schweigend schaue ich aufs tiefe Wasser. Das Herz kann zauberhafte Geheimnisse darin fühlen. Es plätschert, taut, zärtlich und liebevoll. In dem Murmeln liegt Zauberkraft, man hört Gedanken und uferlose Leidenschaften... eine geheimnisvolle Stimme, die die Seele beunruhigt. Sie macht zärtlich, erschreckt, weckt Zweifel. Zuhören befiehlt sie? Ich rührte mich nicht von der Stelle. Jagt sie mich fort? -- Fortlaufen würde ich, verwirrt. In die Tiefe ruft sie mich? -- Ohne Bedenken stürzte ich mich hinein.
