      Dein Zauberbild
      Erscheint, so mild
Wie [Hesperus]4 im Abendgolde,
Dem fernen Freund, geliebte Holde!
 
      Er sehnt wie hier
      Sich stets nach dir;
Fest, wie den Stamm die [Eppichranke,]5
Umschlingt Dich liebend sein Gedanke.
 
      Durchbebt dich auch
      Im Abendhauch
Des Brudergeistes leises [Wehen]6
Mit Vorgefühl vom [Wiedersehen]7?
 
      Er ists, der lind
      Dir, süßes Kind,
Des Schleiers Silbernebel kräuselt,

Wie kommt's, daß du so traurig bist,
Da alles froh erscheint?
Man sieht dir's an den Augen an,
Gewiß du hast geweint.

"Und hab' ich einsam auch geweint,
So ist's mein [eigner]1 Schmerz,
Und Thränen fließen gar so süß,
Erleichtern mir das Herz."

Die frohen Freunde laden dich,
O komm an unsre Brust!
Und was du auch verloren hast,
[Vertraue]2 den Verlust.

"Ihr lärmt und rauscht und ahnet nicht,
Was mich den Armen quält.
Ach nein, verloren hab' ich's nicht,
So sehr es mir auch fehlt."

So raffe dich denn eilig auf,
Du bist ein junges Blut.
In deinen Jahren hat man Kraft
Und zum Erwerben Muth.

"Ach nein, erwerben kann ich's nicht,
Es steht mir gar zu fern.
Es weilt so hoch, es blinkt so schön,
Wie droben jener Stern."

Die Sterne, die begehrt man nicht,
Man freut sich ihrer Pracht,
Und mit Entzücken blickt man auf
In jeder heitern Nacht.

So manchen lieben Tag;
Verweinen laßt die Nächte mich,
So lang' ich weinen mag."

Über [Thal und Fluß]1 getragen,
Ziehet rein der Sonne Wagen.
Ach, sie regt in ihrem Lauf,
So wie deine, meine Schmerzen,
Tief im Herzen,
Immer morgens wieder auf.

Kaum will mir die Nacht noch frommen,
Denn die Träume selber kommen
Nun in trauriger Gestalt,
Und ich fühle dieser Schmerzen,
Still im Herzen,
Heimlich bildende Gewalt.

Schon seit manchen schönen Jahren
Seh' ich unten Schiffe fahren;
Jedes kommt an seinen Ort;
Aber ach, die steten Schmerzen,
Fest im Herzen,
Schwimmen nicht im Strome fort.

Schön in Kleidern muß ich kommen,
Aus dem Schrank sind sie genommen,
Weil es heute Festtag ist;
Niemand [ahnet]2, daß von Schmerzen
Herz im Herzen
Grimmig mir zerrissen ist. 

Heimlich muß ich immer weinen,
Aber freundlich kann ich scheinen
Und sogar gesund und roth;
Wären tödtlich diese Schmerzen
