Kaum will mir die Nacht noch frommen, Denn die Träume selber kommen Nun in trauriger Gestalt, Und ich fühle dieser Schmerzen, Still im Herzen, Heimlich bildende Gewalt. Schon seit manchen schönen Jahren Seh' ich unten Schiffe fahren; Jedes kommt an seinen Ort; Aber ach, die steten Schmerzen, Fest im Herzen, Schwimmen nicht im Strome fort. Schön in Kleidern muß ich kommen, Aus dem Schrank sind sie genommen, Weil es heute Festtag ist; Niemand [ahnet]2, daß von Schmerzen Herz im Herzen Grimmig mir zerrissen ist. Nauw'lijks wil de nacht nog helpen, Daar mij dromen overstelpen Dan met treurnis die mij kwelt, En ik voel van deze droefheid, Die in 't hart snijdt, 't Heim'lijk groeiende geweld. Al zovele mooie jaren Zie 'k beneden schepen varen, Alle komen op hun plek; Maar helaas, mijn eeuw'ge droefheid, Die zich vastbijt, Drijft in de rivier niet weg. Mooi gekleed, ja, moet ik komen; 't Pak is uit de kast genomen, Daar 't vandaag een feestdag is; Geen kan raden, dat door droefheid, 't Hart in waarheid Wreed in mij gebroken is.
