For a long time now I have loved you: (the avowal goes back eighteen years!). You are pink, I am pallid; I have the winters, you the springs. The white lilacs of the graveyard have blossomed above my temples; soon I'll have the entire clump to shade my withered brow. My faded sun now sinking will vanish over the horizon, and on the hillside cemetery I see my final home. Oh that from your lips there might fall onto mine a belated kiss, so that in my grave I might rest with a tranquil heart!
