Langsam wird mein Kindchen müde, 
  leise [kommt herbei]¹ die Nacht; 
  stille Wolken gehn am Himmel, 
  und der Mond ist aufgewacht. 

Schaut mit seinen klaren Blicken 
  in des Kindes Kämmerlein, 
  streichelt es mit sanften Händen 
  in den schönsten Traum hinein.

Evening song

Slowly my little child grows tired,
  quietly night approaches;
  silent clouds move across the sky,
  and the moon has woken up.

With its clear gaze it looks
  into the child's chamber,
  with soft hands it caresses the child
  into the most beautiful dream.
