Ich wandre durch die stille Nacht,
Da schleicht der Mond so heimlich sacht
Oft aus der dunklen Wolkenhülle,
Und hin und her im Tal,
Erwacht die Nachtigall
Dann wieder alles grau und stille.

O wunderbarer Nachtgesang,
Von fern im Land der Ströme Gang,
Leis Schauern in den dunkeln Bäumen --
Wirr'st die Gedanken mir,
Mein irres Singen hier 
Ist wie ein Rufen nur aus Träumen.

an des Abendhimmels Pracht,
duftig liegst du ohne Grenzen,
märchenschöne Sommernacht.

Jubeln möcht' ich, doch ich neige
still das Haupt zum Erdengrund;
wenn die Himmel reden, schweige,
schweig du armer Menschenmund.

4. Gäb's ein einzig Brünnelein

Gäb's ein einzig Brünnelein
auf der weiten Erden, 
mancher litte Durstes Pein
ohn' erlabt zu werden. 

Aber Brünnlein ohne Zahl
laden ein zum Genusse, 
springen von Gebirg zu Tal
lustig hin zum Flusse. 

Gäb's ein einzig Bürschlein gut
auf der weiten Erde, 
da verzagte wohl der Mut
mancher Jungfrau werte. 

So giebt's Bürschlein auch genug.
Du bist nicht der eine, 
dünkst dich schön und gar so klug,
bist's nicht den ich meine.

O frage nicht in bitt'rem Harm, 
warum du ohne dein Verschulden
an Sorgen reich, an Freuden arm,
so viel des Elends mußt erdulden.

Warum? Du marterst dich vergebens 
und bringst doch nicht ein Fünkchen licht
ins dunkle Rätsel deines lebens.
Drum dulde still und frage nicht. 

O frage nicht in bangem Schrnerz, 
wenn bitt're Leiden dich bedrücken,
warum dein armes schwaches Herz
erhoffte Freuden nicht beglücken. 

Frag' nicht, warurn es deinem Leben 
an Glück und Sonnenschein gebricht?
Dir ward ein Menschenloos gegeben.
Drum dulde still und frage nicht.
