Je ne veux pas mourir pour rien, mais je me plais à l’idée de tomber sur la colline du sacrifice pour la patrie, de répandre le sang de mon coeur pour la patrie. C’est pour bientôt ! Ils ont mûri, les fruits passés au feu, à la cuisson puis goûtés sur la terre, car c’est la règle que tout s’y dissolve, comme les serpents-prophètes qui rêvent sur les hauteurs du ciel. Il y a beaucoup à assumer, comme un faix de bûches sur les épaules. Mais les sentiers sont difficiles. De même, les fondements et les anciennes règles de la terre, assujettis, s’en vont à la dérive, comme de mauvais chevaux. Et toujours s’accroît l’envie de s’affranchir. Il y a beaucoup à assumer. Mais la fidélité fait défaut. Nous ne voulons regarder ni devant ni derrière, nous nous laissons bercer, comme sur un esquif qui tangue sur la mer.

Souvent, comme un enfant, je regarde par terre, cherchant dans une anfractuosité à me garder de toi et je voudrais trouver, stupide que je suis, un endroit où tu ne soies pas, toi le Ravageur ! Laisse-moi enfin, Père, venir à toi les yeux grands ouverts ! N’as-tu pas éveillé en moi l’esprit par ton éclair ? Ne m’as-tu pas magnifiquement appelé à la vie, ô Père ? Une sainte vigueur nous vient des jeunes pampres ; quand les mortels parcourent paisiblement la campagne sous la douce haleine de la brise, un dieu apaisant vient à leur devant ; mais toi tu éveilles plus puissamment encore l’âme pure des adolescents, et tu enseignes aux anciens la sagesse par les arts ; il n’y a que le mal qui accroisse le mal, mais disparait bientôt, quand tu l’empoignes, toi le Ravageur !

Les marins, eux aussi, s’en reviennent au port. Dans les villes au loin, l’affairement bruyant du marché s’estompe gaiment ; sous la ramée, le dîner convivial dispense ses lumières aux amis. Mais moi, où aller ? Les mortels vivent de leur salaire, de leur labeur ; dans la peine ou le repos, tout est joie ; pourquoi donc, pour moi seul, l’aiguillon ne désarme-t-il pas dans mon coeur ?
