Come è adorna la casa per la festa! Le luci splendono sull'albero di Natale! O tempo lieto! O sogno beato! La madre siede circondata dai bambini; ora fa un cenno di silenzio e canta le lodi di Gesù Bambino. E intorno, illuminato dall'albero di Natale, è rappresentato in immagini il mondo delle palme del libro sacro. I bambini guardano la bellezza delle immagini e cantano con grande attenzione, è così dolce sentirli, nella notte santa! O quadro felice nello scenario di festa! O luci d'oro sull'albero di natale! O tempo lieto! O sogno beato!

Die Hirten wachen nachts im Feld; so still und dunkel liegt die Welt, die Menschen alle schlafen: Aber die Hirten, die armen Hirten halten Wacht bei den Schafen. Und sieh! ein Engel licht und schön hernieder schwebt von Himmelshöhn, Ein Bote auserkoren: "Freuet euch, Hirten,Ihr guten Hirten, der Heiland der Welt ist geboren." Und Engel singen ringsumher: "Sei Gott im Himmel Ruhm und Ehr, den Menschen Frieden werde!" Aber die Hirten, die frommen Hirten knieten nieder zur Erde. Dann eilten sie zum heil'gen Ort, Maria und Joseph sahn sie dort, den Sohn gehüllt in Windlein. Selige Hirten, die guten Hirten beteten an das Kindlein.

I pastori vegliano di notte nei campi, così tacito e scuro è il mondo, tutti dormono. Ma i pastori, i poveri pastori, stanno svegli vicino alle pecore. E guarda: un angelo luminoso e bello vola quaggiù dall'alto del cielo, messaggero prescelto: "Rallegratevi pastori, voi buoni pastori, il Salvatore del mondo è nato!" E angeli cantano intorno: "Sia gloria e onore a Dio nei cieli, venga pace agli uomini!" Ma i pastori, i pii pastori si inginocchiavano a terra. Quindi si affrettarono verso il luogo santo, videro là Maria e Giuseppe, e il Figlio avvolto in fasce. Beati i pastori, i buoni pastori che pregarono il Bambino.

Engel singen umher: "Gott im Himmel sei Ehr' Und den Menschen hienieden Sei Frieden!" Eilen die Hirten fort, Eilen zum heilgen Ort, Beten an in den Windlein Das Kindlein.

I pastori vegliano nei campi; la notte regna sul mondo; vegliano solo i pastori nella campagna. Ed un angelo luminoso saluta i pastori e annuncia: "Cristo, la salvezza dei giusti, è arrivato!" Angeli cantano intorno: "A Dio in cielo sia gloria! Ed agli uomini quaggiù sia pace!" Si affrettano I pastori, si affrettano verso il luogo santo, pregano il Bambino in fasce.

Tre Re vengono dall'oriente; una stella li guida verso le rive del Giordano. In Giudea domandano a tutti, dove è il Re appena nato? Vogliono offrire in dono al Bambino oro, incenso e mirra. E chiara splende la luce della stella: alla stalla arrivano i Re; guardano il Bambinello con tenerezza, pregando si inchinano i Re; portano oro, incenso e mirra in dono al dolcissimo Bambino. O creatura umana! Sia fedele il tuo passo! I re camminano, vai con loro! La stella dell'amore, la stella della Grazia rischiari la tua meta, così che tu cerchi il Signore, e se non hai oro, incenso e mirra, dona il tuo cuore al dolcissimo bambino!

Das Knäblein nach acht Tagen Ward gen Jerusalem Zum Gotteshaus getragen Vom Stall in Bethlehem. Da kommt ein Greis geschritten, Der fromme Simeon, Er nimmt in Tempels Mitten Vom Mutterarm den Sohn. Vom Angesicht des Alten Ein Strahl der Freude bricht, Er preiset Gottes Walten Weissagungsvoll und spricht: "Nun lässest du in Frieden, Herr, deinen Diener gehn, Da du mir noch beschieden, Den Heiland anzusehn, Den du der Welt gesendet, Daß er dem Heidenthum Des Lichtes Helle spendet Zu Deines Volkes Ruhm!" Mit froh [erstaunten]1 Sinnen Vernimmt's der Eltern Paar, Dann tragen sie von hinnen Das Knäblein wunderbar.

Il bimbo di otto giorni fu portato a Gerusalemme alla casa di Dio dalla stalla di Betlemme. Là venne un vecchio venerando, il pio Simeone, che prese in mezzo al tempio il Bambino dalle braccia della madre. Dal volto del vegliardo venne fuori un raggio di gioia, egli lodò la bontà di Dio e profeticamente disse: "Ora lascia andare in pace, Signore, il Tuo servo, ora che mi hai concesso di vedere il Salvatore, che Tu hai mandato al mondo, perché doni ai pagani lo splendore della luce, per gloria del Suo popolo!" Con lieto stupore ascoltarono queste parole i genitori, poi portarono via di là il bellissimo Bambino.

Il tenero Bimbo diventò un uomo, ci ha liberato dalla maledizione del peccato; ma si china sempre con amicizia e amore verso la schiera dei bambini. Avete sentito il richiamo del Signore, la voce del Salvatore, dolce e morbida? "Lasciate che i piccoli vengano a me, perché loro è il regno dei Cieli!" Mi riporta il tempo di Natale ai sogni del passato; il respiro della memoria muove dolcemente il velo delle immagini dell'infanzia; allora splendevano le luci sull'albero, mi sembra di diventare simile ai bambini, come se potessi venire con voi piccoli, a condividere il vostro Regno dei Cieli.

Das einst ein Kind auf Erden war, Christkindlein, kommt noch jedes Jahr. Kommet vom hohen Sternenzelt, Freut und beglücket alle Welt. Mit Kindern feiert's froh den Tag, Wo Christkind in der Krippe lag. Den Christbaum zündet's überall, Weckt Orgelklang und Glockenschall. Christkindlein kommt zu Arm und Reich, Die Guten sind ihm alle gleich. Danket ihm denn und grüßt es fein, Auch Euch beglückte Christkindlein.

Colui che fu Bambino sulla terra, il Bambino Gesù torna tutti gli anni. Viene da lassù, dalla volta stellata, rallegra e fa felice tutto il mondo! Coi bambini si festeggia lietamente il giorno in cui Gesù Bambino giacque nella mangiatoia. Dappertutto si accende l'albero di Natale, desta concenti d'organo e suoni di campane. Gesù Bambino viene per poveri e ricchi, i buoni per lui sono tutti uguali. Ringraziatelo dunque, e salutatelo come merita, anche per la vostra gioia viene Gesù Bambino!
