[Die stille Wasserrose]¹
Steigt aus dem blauen See,
[Die Blätter flimmern und blitzen]²,
Der Kelch ist weiß wie Schnee.

Da gießt der Mond vom Himmel
All' seinen gold'nen Schein,
Gießt alle seine Strahlen
In ihren Schooß hinein.

Im Wasser um die Blume
Kreiset ein weißer Schwan,
Er [singt]³ so süß, so leise
Und schaut die Blume an.

Er singt so süß, so leise
Und will im Singen vergehn --
O Blume, weiße Blume,
Kannst du das Lied verstehn?

Was lehnst du [dich]¹ voll Traurigkeit
An diesen Blütenbaum?
Ich denk' an meine Blütezeit,
An meinen Jugendtraum.

Der Jüngling ist zum Mann gereift,
Drob zagt des Mannes Brust?
Sind erst die Blüten abgestreift,
Erschlafft des Lebens Lust.

Du schlürfest aus der Wahrheit Quell.
Dem besten Forscher gleich!
Doch nimmer stralt mir sonnenhell
Der Liebe Feenreich.

Träumend horch' ich auf des Baches 
Plätschernd leises Wellenspiel; 
Mich durchwebt ein träumrich-waches 
Süßes Schlummerlustgefühl.

Über mir in grünen Zweigen
Zittert heiß des Mittags Glut;
Die erhitzten Blätter neigen 
Sehnend sich zur kühlen Flut.

Labung athmend badeluftern 
Feiern sie in schwüler Ruh,
Und die hellen Wellchen flüstern
Ihnen kühle Grüße zu. --

Hin und her mit wirrer Schnelle
Streifen Käfer in der Flut;
Flüchtig gaukelt die Forelle, 
Zierlich leicht und frohgemuth. 

Und die schimmernde Libelle 
Wiegt auf schwankem Halme sich;
In des Baches klarer Welle 
Spiegelt sie sich jüngferlich.
 
Mittagsstille, Mittagsschwüle! 
Müde ruh' ich an dem Bach,
Und der Wasser leisem Spiele 
Schau' ich schlafumdämmert nach.

Still verschwimmen so im linden, 
Kühlen Traume Geist und Sinn --
Die verschlafnen Wünsche finden
Kaum noch zu der Liebsten hin.

Mir ist's, als trüg' ich in der Brust
Das ganze Himmelreich!
O höchstes Leid, o höchste Lust,
Wie seid ihr euch so gleich!

Ihn schläfert; mit weißer Decke
Umhüllen ihn Eis und Schnee.

Er träumt von einer Palme,
Die fern im Morgenland,

Auf brennender Felsenwand.

Es war, als [hätt']¹ der Himmel,
Die Erde still geküßt,
Daß sie im Blütenschimmer
Von ihm [nun]² träumen müßt.

Die Luft ging durch die Felder,
Die Ähren wogten sacht,
Es rauschten leis die Wälder,
So sternklar war die Nacht.

Und meine Seele spannte
Weit ihre Flügel aus,
Flog durch die stillen [Lande]³,
Als flöge sie nach Haus.
