O du, vor dem die Stürme schweigen, Vor dem das Meer versinkt in Ruh', Dies wilde Herz nimm hin zu eigen Und führ' es deinem Frieden zu: Dies Herz, das, ewig umgetrieben, Entlodert allzu rasch entfacht Und, ach, mit seinem irren Lieben Sich selbst und andre elend macht. Entreiß es, Herr, dem Sturm der Sinne, Der Wünsche treulos schwankem Spiel; Dem dunkeln Drange seiner Minne, Gib ihm ein unvergänglich Ziel; Auf daß es, los vom Augenblicke, Von Zweifel, Angst und Reue frei Sich einmal ganz und voll erquicke Und endlich, endlich stille sei.
