So laßt mich scheinen, bis ich werde, Zieht mir das weiße Kleid nicht aus! Ich eile von der [schönen]1 Erde Hinab in jenes [feste]2 Haus. Dort ruh' ich eine kleine Stille, Dann öffnet sich der frische Blick; Ich lasse dann die reine Hülle, Den Gürtel und den Kranz zurück. Und jene [himmlischen]3 Gestalten Sie fragen nicht nach Mann und Weib, Und keine Kleider, keine Falten Umgeben den verklärten Leib. Zwar lebt' ich ohne Sorg und Mühe, Doch fühlt' ich tiefen Schmerz genung. Vor Kummer altert' ich zu frühe; Macht mich auf ewig wieder jung.

Laat mij zo1 lijken tot ik zijn zal, Trek mij het witte kleed niet uit! De aarde laat ik, ik verdwijn al Omlaag naar ginds, het vaste2 huis. Daar rust ik in de stilt' een tijdje, Dan opent zich een nieuw gezicht; Ik leg dan af mijn blank habijtje, Mijn sjerp ook en mijn kroontje licht. En al die hemelse figuren, Zij talen niet naar man of vrouw, 't Verheerlijkt lichaam is het pure, Bevrijd van kleren, tooi en vouw. Wel werd mij zorg en last onthouden, Toch had ik diep verdriet dat wrong. Door leed werd ik te vroeg een oude; O, maak voor eeuwig mij weer jong!

1 Mignon zingt dit, verkleed als engel, in een toneelstukje ("Ich hatte mir Mignon zu dieser Rolle ausgesucht, und sie ward an dem bestimmten Tage in ein langes, leichtes, weißes Gewand anständig gekleidet. Es fehlte nicht an einem goldenen Gürtel um die Brust und an einem gleichen Diadem in den Haaren. Anfangs wollte ich die Flügel weglassen, doch bestanden die Frauenzimmer, die sie anputzten, auf ein Paar großer, goldner Schwingen, an denen sie recht ihre Kunst zeigen wollten. So trat, mit einer Lilie in der einen Hand und mit einem Körbchen in der andern, die wundersame Erscheinung in die Mitte der Mädchen und überraschte mich selbst. "Da kommt der Engel!" sagte ich. Die Kinder traten alle wie zurück; endlich riefen sie aus: "Es ist Mignon!" und getrauten sich doch nicht, dem wundersamen Bilde näher zu treten.")
