Adéu-siau, vosaltres companys que em feu senyals, i no digueu mal de mi quan hagi marxat; noies calleu, no parleu de comiat i de tristor, deixaré anar una ploma per damunt el mur i tal com voli, dreta o de través, així anirà el meu camí. Em posaren un flairós ramet al gipó i em serviren encara una copa de vi, llavors vaig seguir el meu camí fora del portal i em vaig trobar tot sol en terra estranya. Des de la passera vaig mirar enrere a les torres, allà, des dels matolls i els tancats, els ocells cridaven: Endavant, company, endavant! Per què vacil•les? Vaig anar per l’ermàs i l’aiguamoll, allà bufava el vent molt fred, cantava al canyís, xiulava als joncs, i després vaig anar per el bosc ombrívol, allà els arbres es vinclaven, les branques cruixien, allà el rierol escumejava i mormolava: Segueix-me!
