Aquest és el trist goig de la primavera! Les donzelles pletòriques, en exaltada colla, s’abalancen cap allí amb els cabells esbullats, amb udols d’aflicció i els pits descoberts: “Adonis! Adonis!” Es fa de nit. Amb la llum de les torxes cerquen d’una banda a l’altra del bosc que, confús de basarda, ressona entre plors i rialles, crits i sospirs: “Adonis! Adonis!” El bellíssim jovencell està estirat a terra, pàl•lid i mort, la sang tenyeix totes les flors de vermell, i el so d’un plany omple l’aire: “Adonis! Adonis!”
