Was soll ich länger weilen, [Bis]1 man mich trieb' hinaus? Laß irre Hunde heulen Vor ihres Herren Haus!

Vreemd was ek met my aankoms, vreemd moet ek weer vertrek.

Wat moet hul omgee vir my smarte? Hul kind is mos ’n welaf bruid.

Waar vind ek nou ’n bloeisel, waar nou ’n lentetuin? Hier is net dooie blomme, hul blare lankal bruin. Wat mag ek van haar saamvat, net my herinnering? As al my smarte stilbly, wie sal van haar dan sing? Hier, in my hart se koue, staar koud haar beeld en stom: Sou ooit my hart weer smelt, dan smelt ook haar beeld met hom.

Der du so lustig rauschtest, Du heller, wilder Fluß, Wie still bist du geworden, Giebst keinen Scheidegruß.

Sien jy jou eie beeld nou, my hart, in die rivier?

Lê my liefste ooit weer in my arm?

... so trek ek op my reisweg op trae voete heen, deur vreugdevolle lewe: Misken, verwerp, alleen.

Hoe beur jy dan so sonderling, my hart?

Jaag my gerus weg, blaffende honde, laat my nie rus nie, wie is nou vaak?

Misleiding kan my net beloon!

Tot by ’n dodeakker het my die pad gelei. Hiér is waar ek wil kuier, so dink ek toe by my. Wil jy my nogtans wegwys, genadelose plek? Dan, verder, stapper, verder, hervat jou bitter trek!

Waai die sneeu teen my gesig vas, skud ek hom net af.
