3. Die Nachtglocke im Winter [sung text not yet checked]

Feierlich, schauerlich,
Düster und bang
Tönet der Glocke
Schlummergesang.

Löscht nun die Lichter,
Die Asche deckt zu;
Der Morgen bringt Sorgen,
Die Nacht bringt die Ruh!

Die Fenster sind dunkel,
Die Herde sind kalt, --
Die Töne verklungen,
Die Schritte verhallt.

Kein Laut in der Kammer,
Im Saale kein Schall;
Schlaf und Vergessenheit
Herrscht überall!

Saugend ätherischen Duft!

Strebe dem Wind nur entgegen
Daß er die Wange dir kühle,
Grüße den Himmel mit Lust!
Werden sich bange Gefühle
Im Unermeßlichen regen?
Athme den Feind aus der Brust!
