Wenn der Frühling auf die Berge steigt Und im Sonnenstrahl der Schnee zerfließt, Wenn das erste Grün am Baum sich zeigt, Und im Gras das erste Blümlein sprießt -- Wenn vorbei im Thal Nun mit einem Mal Alle [Regenzeit]1 und Winterqual, Schallt es von den Höh'n Bis zum Thale weit: O, wie wunderschön Ist die Frühlingszeit! Wenn am Gletscher heiß die Sonne leckt, [Wenn]2 die Quelle von den Bergen springt, Alles rings mit [jungem]3 Grün sich deckt Und das [Lustgetön]4 der Wälder klingt-- [Lüfte]5 lind und lau Würzt die grüne Au, Und der Himmel lacht so rein und blau, Schallt es von den Höh'n Bis zum Thale weit: O, wie wunderschön Ist die Frühlingszeit! Mir ist, als sollt' ich Flügel dehnen Ins klarvertiefte Blau dahin; Mein Auge schwillt von heißen Tränen, Und doch in Freuden steht mein Sinn. Geheimnisvolle Glut ergreift mich Bei tiefer Nacht oft wunderbar, Und wie mit süßer Ahnung streift mich Im Traum ein flatternd Lockenhaar. Und morgens dann in roter Frühe Erwacht mein Herz so reich und froh, Als wüßt' es, daß sein Glück schon blühe, Und müßte nur noch raten, wo?

Es glänzte golden die Sonne Noch zitternd am Bergesrand, Die Abendwölken glühten Wie Rosen am goldenen Band. Und drunten rauschten die Wogen Das wunderbare Lied Vom Lenz, der über die Berge Zu allen Herzen zieht. Da schaut' ich dir ins Auge So tief, so licht, so klar, Und wußte, daß in zwei Herzen Der Frühling gezogen war.

Wir gingen durch duftenden Wiesen, Da haben wir oft uns gebückt, Und Blümlein zu unseren Füßen Still liebenden Sinnes gepflückt. Und weißt du, Herzliebchen, wie balde Ein Sträußchen uns schmückte die Brust, Und wie dann im dämmernden Walde Wir flugs uns'res Glückes bewußt? Wir brachen das zagende Schweigen, Wie wir es seit Langem gemüßt, Und haben in flüsternden Zweigen Uns, ach, so herzinnig geküßt. Es war eine selige Stunde, Und ahnungsüß rauschte der Hain Und sangen die Vögel die Kunde: "Du mein, ich ewig auch Dein!"

Zum Maienfest um Pfingsten Kein Bursche bleibt zu Haus, Es schmückt auch den Geringsten Ein Riesen-Blumenstrauß. Auf blankgeputzten Pferden, In bunter Bänder Pracht -- Maikönige zu werden, Wird früh sich aufgemacht. Das ist ein Wettereiten, Ein Jagen toll und dreist, Den Preis sich zu erstreiten, Der so viel Glück verheißt. Und wie im wilden Tanze Dann Blum' und Bänder wehn, Wenn in dem Mädchenkranze Maikönigin zu sehn! Das ist ein Fest der Jungen Im ewig jungen Mai, Gesprungen und gesungen, Gefreit wird auch dabei. Und, die sich heut' im Scherze Nur werden zugesellt, Wer weiß, wie bald das Herze Sie fest umschlungen hät. Dann gibt's ein lustig Pärchen, Ein frohes Hochzeitsfest Und kaum nach einem Jährchen Dann zwitschert es im Nest. Das kommt vom Maienfeste, Vom wilden Tanz und Ritt, Man sagt ja stets: Das Beste Bringt erst die Zukunft mit!
