View text with all available footnotesWhen first published in 1828, the poem "Nacht" was one stanza long (usually referred to as Nacht Teil 1); in 1837, Eichendorff added Teil 2, which encompassed stanza 2; in 1839, Eichendorff added Teil 3, which encompassed stanzas 3 and 4; and in 1841 he added Teil 4, encompassing stanzas 5 and 6, and thus giving the poem its final form.
