Immer schaust du in die Ferne, wie die Wolken [flieh'n]1, wie am Himmel goldne Sterne, ihre Bahnen zieh'n! Und die hohen Gipfel locken dich bergauf, bergab. Knabe mit den braunen Locken, nahmst den Wanderstab. [Hat]2 ja nimmer dich gelitten in des Vaters Haus; [stürmtest]3 fort mit raschen Schritten, an dem Hut den Strauß. Sprachst zu mir beim Hände drücken: "Kind, die Welt ist weit!" und ich gab dir bis zur Brücken, weinend das Geleit. Rosen hab' ich dir gebrochen, wie der Dorn auch sticht, was beim Abschied du versprochen, o vergiß es nicht! Ach, verweht sind Wort und Lieder und verrauscht das Glück. Brauner Knabe, kehrst du wieder an mein Herz zurück?

Still thine eyes are on the distance, on the clouds above; on the golden stars, that ceaseless in their courses move. And the lofty peaks invite thee Over hill and plain, youth, with locks that darkly cluster, thou wouldst freedom gain. Though thou never knewest sorrow in thy father's home, thou didst rush with hasty footstep eager all to roam. Tou didst say, my hand while pressing: Child, the world is wide! To the bridge I wander'd with thee weeping at thy side. Roses fair for thee I gather'd, which with thorns were set; what at parting thou didst promise, do thou not forget! Ah! both speech and song are silent, I am glad no more. Him I long for will the future to my heart restore?
