Ich suche allerlanden eine Stadt
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG

Ich habe Liebe in die Welt gebracht --
Daß blau zu blühen jedes Herz vermag,
Und hab ein Leben müde mich gewacht,
In Gott gehüllt den dunklen Atemschlag.

O Gott, schließ um mich deinen Mantel fest;

In every land I seek a city
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
In every land I seek a city
That has an angel in front of its gate.
I bear his great wing,
Broken, heavily upon my scapula
And on my brow his star as a seal.

And I wander always in the night . . .
And I have brought love into the world --
That every heart is able to bloom bluely,
And for a lifetime I have wearied myself with keeping watch,
Wrapping my dark breathing in God.

Oh God, envelop me firmly in your mantle;
I know that I am dregs in the round-bottomed glass,
And when the last human has spilled out the world,
You do not again let me depart from your omnipotence
And a new terrestrial globe comes to enclose me.
