  Ich pflücke sie und denke,
Und die Gedanken all,

Singt laut die Nachtigall.

  [Ja,]³ was ich denke, singt sie
[Lautschmetternd]⁴, daß es schallt;
Mein zärtliches Geheimnis

Отвечал он ей: ,,Зовусь Магометом я, 
из Иемена родом,
я из дома бедных Азров, 
полюбив, мы умираем!``

Täglich ward er bleich und bleicher.

  Eines Abends trat die Fürstin 
Auf ihn zu mit raschen Worten:
"Deinen Namen will ich wissen, 
Deine Heimat, deine Sippschaft!"

  Und der Sklave sprach: "Ich heiße
Mahomet, ich bin aus Yemen,
Und mein Stamm sind jene Asra,
Welche sterben, wenn sie lieben."
