Am Fenster saß ich trauernd, stumm geneigt Über ein seidenes Kissen, das ich stickte. Da stach ich mich, -- und rotes Blut rann auf Die weiße, weiße Rose, die ich stickte, Und eine rote Rose ward daraus. Wie dacht ich da an dich, der ferne ist Im Kriege! Und ich dacht, wie auch du Dein Blut vergießt, -- und heiße Tränen stürzten Mir aus den Augen, und ich weinte lang. Hei, jetzt vernahm ich Hufschlag eines Pferdes! Ich sprang empor! Er ist's! Da fühlt ich, weh', Daß es mein Herz war, das so heftig schlug. Und wieder saß ich, stickte trauernd weiter Und stickte Tränen in das seidene Kissen, Die schimmerten wie wundervolle Perlen Rings um die rote, rote Rose her.
