Wir saßen am Fischerhause, Und schauten nach der See; Die Abendnebel kamen, Und stiegen in die Höh'. Im Leuchtturm wurden die Lichter Allmählich angesteckt, Und in der weiten Ferne Ward noch ein Schiff entdeckt. Wir sprachen von Sturm und Schiffbruch, Vom Seemann, und wie er lebt, Und zwischen Himmel und Wasser, Und Angst und Freude schwebt. Wir sprachen von fernen Küsten, Vom Süden und vom Nord, Und von den seltsamen Menschen Und seltsamen Sitten dort. Am Ganges duftet's und leuchtet's, Und Riesenbäume blühn, Und schöne, stille Menschen Vor Lotosblumen knien. In Lappland sind schmutzige Leute, Plattköpfig, breitmäulig, klein; Sie kauern ums Feuer und backen Sich Fische, und quäken und schrein. Die Mädchen horchten ernsthaft, Und endlich sprach niemand mehr; Das Schiff war nicht mehr sichtbar, Es dunkelte gar zu sehr.

Nous étions assis près de la maison du pêcheur, Et regardions la mer ; Les brouillards du soir approchaient, Et s'élevaient vers le ciel. Au phare les feux Progressivement s'allumèrent, Et loin au large On pouvait encore déceler un bateau. Nous parlions de tempête et de naufrage, Du marin et comment il vit, Et, entre ciel et eau, Et peur et joie, comment il balance. Nous parlions de côtes lointaines, Du sud et du nord, Et des gens étranges, Et des mœurs étranges de-là-bas. Au bord du Gange il y a des parfums et des lumières, Et des arbres géants en fleurs, Et des hommes beaux et calmes S'agenouillent devant des fleurs de lotus. En Laponie il y a des gens sales, À la tête plate et large, petits ; Il mâchouillent autour du feu et se font cuire Du poisson, et braillent et crient. Les filles, attentives, écoutaient, Puis finalement plus personne ne parlait ; On ne voyait plus le navire, Il commençait à faire bien noir.
