Wir saßen am Fischerhause, Und schauten nach der See; Die Abendnebel kamen, Und stiegen in die Höh'. Im Leuchtturm wurden die Lichter Allmählich angesteckt, Und in der weiten Ferne Ward noch ein Schiff entdeckt. Wir sprachen von Sturm und Schiffbruch, Vom Seemann, und wie er lebt, Und zwischen Himmel und Wasser, Und Angst und Freude schwebt. Wir sprachen von fernen Küsten, Vom Süden und vom Nord, Und von den seltsamen Menschen Und seltsamen Sitten dort. Am Ganges duftet's und leuchtet's, Und Riesenbäume blühn, Und schöne, stille Menschen Vor Lotosblumen knien. In Lappland sind schmutzige Leute, Plattköpfig, breitmäulig, klein; Sie kauern ums Feuer und backen Sich Fische, und quäken und schrein. Die Mädchen horchten ernsthaft, Und endlich sprach niemand mehr; Das Schiff war nicht mehr sichtbar, Es dunkelte gar zu sehr.

Presso la casa del pescatore noi guardavamo in direzione del mare; poi su di noi discese la sera e iniziò a sollevarsi la nebbia. A poco a poco la luce del faro incominciò a illuminare lontano, e all'orizzonte, sopra il mare fu visto un vascello navigare. Noi parlavamo di naufragi e tempeste, dei marinai e delle loro esistenze, come, sospesi fra cielo e mare, passino attraverso gioie e paure. Si discorreva di coste remote, di paesi del nord e del meridione, di strane contrade, di popolazioni, della loro vita e dei loro costumi. Sul Gange profuma perfino la luce alberi immensi fioriscono sempre, creature bellissime, con il labbro muto stanno in ginocchio presso i fiori di loto. La gente, in Lapponia, è bassa e sporca, piatta la testa e larga la bocca, attorno al fuoco stanno seduti, friggono pesce, fra ciarle e urli. Serie le ragazze stavano a sentire poi più nessuno prese a parlare; sul mare la nave non più si vedeva l'oscurità era discesa.
