Drei Zigeuner fand ich einmal
Liegen an einer Weide,
Als mein Fuhrwerk mit müder Qual
Schlich durch sandige Heide.

Hielt der eine für sich allein
In den Händen die Fiedel,
[Spielt', umglüht]1 vom Abendschein,
Sich ein [feuriges]2 Liedel.

Hielt der zweite die Pfeif' im Mund,
Blickte nach seinem Rauche,
Froh, als ob er vom Erdenrund
Nichts zum Glücke mehr brauche.

Und der dritte behaglich schlief,
Und sein Zymbal am Baum hing;
Über die Saiten der Windhauch lief,
Über sein Herz ein Traum ging.

An den Kleidern trugen die drei
Löcher und bunte Flicken;
Aber sie boten trotzig frei
Spott den Erdengeschicken.

Dreifach haben sie mir gezeigt,
Wenn das Leben uns nachtet,
Wie man's [verraucht, verschläft]3, vergeigt,
Und es [dreifach]4 verachtet.

Nach den Zigeunern [lang']5 [noch schaun
Mußt ich]6 im Weiterfahren,
Nach den Gesichtern dunkelbraun,

Un jour j'ai trouvé trois tsiganes
Allongés près d'un saule,
Alors que mon chariot, avec grand peine,
Se faufilait à travers les sables de la lande.

Le premier, pour lui seul,
Tenait en ses mains un violon
Et, inondé par les lueurs du soir, se jouait
Un joyeux petit air.

Le second, la pipe à la bouche,
Suivait des yeux sa fumée,
Content, comme si rien à la ronde
Ne pouvait lui apporter plus de bonheur.

Et le troisième dormait confortablement,
Son cymbalum suspendu à l'arbre ;
Le souffle du vent courait sur les cordes,
Un rêve passait sur son cœur.

Tous trois avaient à leurs habits
Des trous et des pièces bariolées ;
Mais ils démontraient une liberté tenace
En se moquant des destinées d'ici-bas..

Ils m'ont trois fois montré,
Lorsque la nuit tombe sur notre vie,
Comment trois fois n'en faire aucun cas,
En dormant, fumant, et jouant du violon.
