Abends weint' ich vor Schmerz;
Und warum du erwachen
Kannst am Morgen mit Lachen,

Note: The poem was first published 1822 in Rückert's Oestliche Rosen where all the poems have no titles. In subsequent editions (Erlangen, 1837: Gesammelte Gedichte, Frankfurt a. M., 1868: Gesammelte Poetische Werke) this poem got the title Lachens und Weinens Grund.

Nun ruht der Wald, die Buchen schlafen,
vom Glanz der Sterne überdacht.
Der Hirte schläft bei seinen Schafen;
und auf der Erde sieht die Nacht.

Die Welt ist still, still wie zum Sterben,
nur eine tiefe Sehnsucht singt
ein letztes Lied mit leisem Werben
und wird dann ruhig, und verklingt.

Wenn's mitternächtigt und nicht Mond
noch Stern das Himmelshaus bewohnt,
läuft zwölfmal durch das Himmelshaus
  die Mitternachtsmaus.

Sie pfeift aus ihrem kleinen Maul, -
im Traume brüllt der Höllengaul...
Doch ruhig läuft ihr Pensum aus
  die Mitternachtsmaus.

Ihr Herr, der große weiße Geist,
ist nämlich solche Nacht verreist.
Wohl ihm! Es hütet ihm sein Haus
  die Mitternachtsmaus.
