Ich will ihr schenken einen Kranz
Von Nesseln und von Dornen ganz:

Derweil sie alle sind am Schmaus,
Soll rot in Flammen stehn das Haus,
Die Gäste schreien und rennen.

Zu Kohle müssen sie brennen.

Lustig, mein Schwesterchen, lustig!
Das war ein alter Ammensang.
Den falschen Rob vergaß ich lang.
Er soll mich sehen lachen!
Hab ich doch einen andern Schatz,
Der mit mir tanzet auf dem Platz -

Ihr Freunde, [hänget, wann ich gestorben]1 bin,
die kleine Harfe hinter dem Altar auf,
wo an der Wand die Totenkränze 
manches verstorbenen Mädchens schimmern. 

Der Küster zeigt dann freundlich [dem Reisenden]2
die kleine Harfe, rauscht mit dem roten [Band]3,
das, an der Harfe festgeschlungen,
unter den goldenen Saiten flattert. 

Oft, sagt er staunend, tönen im Abendrot
von selbst die Saiten, leise wie Bienenton;
die Kinder, hergelockt vom Kirchhof, 
hörten's, und [sah'n]4, wie die Kränze bebten.

Und doch ist einer, welcher dieses Fallen 
unendlich sanft in seinen Händen hält.

Von allen Bergen drücken

es dringt kein Dach, [nicht]3 Hof noch Haus,
kein Laut aus ihrem Rauch heraus,
kaum Türme noch und Brücken.

[Doch]4 als [den]5 Wandrer graute,
da ging ein Lichtlein auf im Grund;
und [durch den]6 [Rauch und Nebel]7
begann [ein leiser Lobgesang]8
aus Kindermund.
