The May is on the way, The May is at the door; In the garden, on the meadow, Little flowers, come forth! I have taken my staff, I have tied up my bundle, Trek further and ever further, Wherever the road takes me. And above me fly the birds, They swarm in a merry dance; They twitter and trill and pipe -, As if their songs might fly to heaven. The wanderer goes alone, Goes silently on his way; The bundle weighs him down; The way becomes too long. Yes, if were we all together We could go off into the countryside! And yet if that could not be, There is only one I would have with me!
