Ich sah die Nacht. Sie schritt vor mir daher,
ein herrlich Weib, gehüllt in Nebelschleier,
das Haupt gesenkt, wie von Gedanken schwer,
die Augen blitzend von verhalt'nem Feuer.

Durchsichtig war sie, Äther nur und Duft,
Ausströmend doch glutheißen Atems Wogen.
Nichts regte sich, und doch kam's durch die Luft
wie leises Liebeswort mir zugeflogen.

Es bannte mich, als riefe sie mir zu,
als lockte sie zu süßer Liebesfeier.
Ich folgte ihr, schritt ohne Rast und Ruh',
erfüllt von ihrem Schatten, ihrem Feuer.
