Guardo nel mio cuore e guardo nel mondo, [fin che dagli occhi non cada la lacrima ardente]1 splende lontano l'orizzonte di luce d'oro, ma mi trattiene il Nord, non lo raggiungo. Sono così stretti i limiti, e il mondo così vasto, e così fuggevole il tempo! Conosco un paese dove nel verde assolato brillano i grappoli sui templi sommersi, dove l'onda purpurea schiuma sulla riva e di futuri cantori sogna l'alloro. Da lontano chiama il desiderio, ed io non posso andarci. Oh, avessi le ali per volare nell'azzurro del cielo, e bagnarmi nel profumo del sole! Ma invano! E ora dopo ora il tempo passa, piango la gioventù, sotterro il canto. Sono così stretti i limiti, e il mondo così vasto, e così fuggevole il tempo!
