Translation by Franz Theremin (1780 - 1846)

My soul is dark ‑ Oh! quickly string
Language: English
My soul is dark - Oh! quickly string
  The harp I yet can brook to hear;
And let thy gentle fingers fling
  Its melting murmurs o'er mine ear. --
If in this heart a hope be dear,
  That sound shall charm it forth again --
If in these eyes there lurk a tear,
  'Twill flow -- and cease to burn my brain --

But bid the strain be wild and deep,
  Nor let thy notes of joy be first:
I tell thee -- Minstrel! I must weep,
  Or else this heavy heart will burst --
For it hath been by sorrow nurst,
  And ached in sleepless silence [long]1 --
And now 'tis doom'd to know the worst,
  And break at once -- or yield to song.

Mein Geist ist trüb
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Available translation(s): ENG
Mein Geist ist trüb', den Ton der Saiten,
  Den jetzt mein wildes Herz erträgt,
Laß ihn in meine Ohren gleiten,
  Von deiner Finger Kunst erregt.
Wenn einen Wunsch mein Herz gepflegt,
  In diesem Ton wird Hoffnung blühen,
Die Träne, die das Auge hegt,
  Wird fließen, statt im Hirn zu glühen.

Doch wild und tief mußt du beginnen,
  Mit keinem Ton, der freudig klingt.
In Thränen muß mir das zerrinnen,
  Wovon [das Herz]1 mir sonst zerspringt.
Denn daß es sich zum Schweigen zwingt,
  Sich nur von Kummer nährt, ist lange;
Und jetzt, wo es so schrecklich ringt,
  Jetzt bricht es, oder schmilzt in Klange.
