Translation Singable translation by Natalie Macfarren (1826 - 1916)

An wildem Klippenstrande
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  CAT ENG
[An wildem]1 Klippenstrande
Ein Felsblock einsam ragt,
Ihn haben von dem Ufer
Die Wellen losgenagt.

Jetzt liegt er halb versunken
Trotzig im grünen Meer,
Die weißen Möwen flattern
Schrill kreischend um ihn her.

Auf dunkeln Wasserpfaden
Tanzt spielend leicht ein Schiff,
Es klingt ein fremdes Singen
Heran zum Felsenriff:

"O wenn ich doch am Rheine
Bei meiner Liebsten wär',
O Heimath, alte Heimath,
Wie machst das Herz du schwer!"

A lonely crag stands yonder
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A lonely crag stands yonder
beyond the wild sea-shore,
the waves with restless beating
have thrust it there of yore.

Half sunk 'neath foaming billows
there it defies the sea,
the whilewing'd gulls, they flutter
about it dismally.

On wat'ry pathway flitting,
a skiff sails thro' the night,
a sound of foreign minstrelsy
on the air takes flight.

Oh, that I were in Rhineland,
where dwells my love forlorn;
oh homeland, treasur'd homeland,
afar from thee I mourn.
