An wildem Klippenstrande
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  CAT ENG
[An wildem]1 Klippenstrande
Ein Felsblock einsam ragt,
Ihn haben von dem Ufer
Die Wellen losgenagt.

Jetzt liegt er halb versunken
Trotzig im grünen Meer,
Die weißen Möwen flattern
Schrill kreischend um ihn her.

Auf dunkeln Wasserpfaden
Tanzt spielend leicht ein Schiff,
Es klingt ein fremdes Singen
Heran zum Felsenriff:

"O wenn ich doch am Rheine
Bei meiner Liebsten wär',
O Heimath, alte Heimath,
Wie machst das Herz du schwer!"

Along the wild cliffs of the shore
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Along the wild cliffs of the shore
A block of granite looms in solitary state,
The gnawing waves have separated it
From the shore.

Now it lies, half submerged,
Defiant in the green sea,
The white seagulls flap
About it, shrilly shrieking.

Upon the dark pathways of water
A ship dances, playfully and lightly,
The sound of a foreign singing
Drifts over to the granite reef:

“Oh if I were only at the Rhine
With my beloved,
Oh homeland, old homeland,
How you make my heart heavy!”
