Hör' ich das Liedchen klingen,
Das einst die Liebste sang,
[So will mir die Brust]¹ zerspringen
[Vor]² wildem [Schmerzendrang.]³

[Es treibt mich]⁴ ein dunkles Sehnen
Hinauf [zur]⁵ Waldeshöh',
Dort löst sich auf in Tränen
Mein übergroßes Weh'.

Es treibt mich hin, es treibt mich her!
Noch wenige Stunden, dann soll ich sie schauen,
sie selber, die schönste der schönen Jungfrauen; -
du [treues]¹ Herz, was pochst du so schwer!

Die Stunden sind aber ein faules Volk!
Schleppen sich behaglich träge,
schleichen gähnend ihre Wege; -
tummle dich, du faules Volk!

Tobende Eile mich treibend erfaßt!
Aber wohl niemals liebten die Horen; -
heimlich im grausamen Bunde verschworen,
spotten sie tückisch der Liebenden Hast.

In den Kelch der Lilie hinein;
Die Lilie soll [klingend]¹ hauchen

Es schauen die Blumen alle
Zur leuchtenden Sonne hinauf;
Es nehmen die Ströme alle
Zum leuchtenden Meere den Lauf.

Es flattern die Lieder alle
Zu meinem leuchtenden Lieb -
Nehmt mit meine Tränen und Seufzer,
Ihr Lieder, wehmütig und trüb!

Der bleiche Heinrich ging vorbei,
Schön Hedwig lag am Fenster.
Sie sprach halblaut: »Gott steh mir bei,
Der unten schaut bleich wie Gespenster!«

Der unten erhebt sein Aug in die Höh,
Hinschmachtend nach Hedewigs Fenster.
Schön Hedwig ergriff es wie Liebesweh,
Auch sie ward bleich wie Gespenster.

Schön Hedwig stand nun mit Liebesharm
Tagtäglich lauernd am Fenster.
Bald aber lag sie in Heinrichs Arm,
Allnächtlich zur Zeit der Gespenster.

Am fernen Horizonte
Erscheint, wie ein Nebelbild,
Die Stadt mit ihren Thürmen,
In Abenddämmrung gehüllt.

Ein feuchter Windzug kräuselt
Die graue Wasserbahn;
Mit traurigem Tacte rudert
Der Schiffer in meinem Kahn.

Die Sonne hebt sich noch einmal
Leuchtend vom Boden empor,
Und zeigt mir jene Stelle,
Wo ich das Liebste verlor.

Mein Knecht! steh auf und sattle schnell,
Und wirf dich auf dein Roß,
Und jage rasch durch Wald und Feld
Nach König Duncans Schloß.

Dort schleiche in den Stall, und wart,
Bis dich der Stallbub schaut.
Den forsch mir aus: "Sprich, welche ist
Von Duncans Töchtern Braut?"

Und spricht der Bub: "Die Braune ist's",
So bring mir schnell die Mär.
Doch spricht der Bub: "Die Blonde ist's",
So eilt das nicht so sehr.

Dann geh zum Meister Seiler hin,
Und kauf mir einen Strick,
Und reite langsam, sprich kein Wort,
Und bring mir den zurück.
