Un ange traversa le minuit azuré ! L’ange disait le chant des célestes patries, Et lune, étoile, nue, écoutaient, attendries, Au bleu minuit, l’hymne sacré. Il disait le délice épanoui des âmes Innocentes dans les jardins du paradis, Et Dieu même, et l’amour sans demain ni jadis En les immarcescibles flammes. Destinée aux soucis, aux larmes d’ici-bas, Il portait dans ses bras une âme, sœur fidèle… L’hymne céleste, voix sans parole au fond d’elle, Faible et vague, n’y mourut pas. Longtemps elle porta, vivante solitaire. Le deuil du ciel parmi les humaines douleurs… Rien n’a valu le bel hymne pour l’âme en pleurs Qu’attristaient les chants de la terre !
