by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832)
Translation by Giuseppe Zaffira (flourished 1868-1886)

Non conosci il bel suol
Language: Italian (Italiano)  after the German (Deutsch)
Non conosci il bel suol
Che di porpora ha il ciel?
Il bel suolo u' de'rai
son più tersi i colori?
Ove l'aura è più dolce,
più lieve l'augel?
Ove in ogni stagione
ha l'ape sempre fiori?
Ove sotto il fulgor
d'un cielo ognor seren
par che l'april s'eterni
all'erbetta in sen?

Ohimé! Potess'io tornare
a quelle amate sponde
onde fui tolta un dì!
Là sol vorrei restare,
amare e morir!

Non conosci l'ostel
che là s'erge sul pian?
Le sale adorne d'or,
le statue alle pareti,
che fanno scolta a notte,
e mi tendon le man?
Il recinto u' si danza
all'ombra degli abeti?
Ed il lago infinito,
alle cui linfe in sen
mille schifi leggieri
sen vanno qual balen?

Ohimé! Potess'io ritornare
a quelle sponde amene,
onde fui tolta un dì!
Là sol vorrei restare,
Amare e morir!
