Die Mutter mahnt mich abends
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Die Mutter mahnt mich [abends]1:
"Trag Sorg zur Ampel, Kind!
Jüngst träumte mir von Feuer -
Auch weht ein wilder Wind."

Das Flämmchen auf der Ampel,
Ich lösch es mit Bedacht,
Das Licht in meinem Herzen
Brennt durch die ganze Nacht.

Die Mutter ruft mich morgens:
"Kind, hebe dich! 's ist Tag!"
Sie pocht an meiner Türe
Dreimal mit starkem Schlag

Und meint, sie habe grausam
Mich aus dem Schlaf geschreckt -
Das Licht in meinem Herzen
Hat längst mich aufgeweckt.

Mother warned me in the evening
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Mother warned me in the evening:
“Attend to the hanging lamp, my child!
I recently had a dream about fire –
And a wild wind was blowing.”

The hanging lamp’s little flame
I extinguished with care,
The light in my heart
Burned throughout the night.

Mother calls me in the morning:
“Child, get up! It’s day!”
She knocks on my door,
Sharply rapping three times.

And believes, that she has rudely
Startled me out of my sleep –
The light in my heart
Woke me long ago.
