by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832)
Translation by Louis Charles Alfred de Musset (1810 - 1857)

Selbstbetrug
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  FRE
Der Vorhang schwebet hin und her
Bei meiner Nachbarin.
Gewiß sie lauschet überquer,
Ob ich zu Hause bin,

Und ob der eifersücht'ge Groll,
Den ich am Tag gehegt,
Sich, wie er nun auf immer soll,
Im tiefen Herzen regt.

Doch leider hat das schöne Kind
Dergleichen nicht gefühlt.
Ich seh', es ist der Abendwind,
Der mit dem Vorhang spielt.

Confirmed with Goethe's poetische und prosaische Werke in zwei Bänden, Volume 1, Issue 1, Stuttgart und Tübingen, Verlag der J. G. Cotta'schen Buchhandlung, 1836, pages 4-5.

Le rideau de ma voisine
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Le rideau de ma voisine
Se soulève lentement.
Elle va, je l'imagine,
  Prendre l'air un moment.

On entr'ouvre la fenêtre ;
Je sens mon cœur palpiter.
Elle veut savoir peut-être
  Si je suis à guetter.

Mais, hélas ! ce n'est qu'un rêve ;
Ma voisine aime un lourdaud,
Et c'est le vent qui soulève
  Le coin de son rideau.
