The fountains mingle with the River
Language: English
Available translation(s): FRE
The [fountains mingle]1 with the River
  And the Rivers with the Ocean,
The winds of Heaven mix for ever
  With a sweet emotion;
Nothing in the world is single;
  All things by a law divine
In one [another's being]2 mingle.
  Why not I with thine? -

See the mountains kiss high Heaven
  And the waves clasp one another;
No sister-flower would be forgiven
  If it disdained its brother;
And the [sunlight clasps]3 the earth
  And the moonbeams kiss the sea:
What [are all these kissings]4 worth
  If thou kiss not me?

L. Lehrman sets lines 5-8, 1-4, 9-16

Philosophie der Liebe
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Quelle eint sich mit dem Strome,
Dass der Strom ins Meer vertauche;
Wind und Wind am blauen Dome
Mischen sich mit sanftem Hauche.
Nichts auf weiter Welt ist einsam,
Jedes folgt und weiht sich hier
Einem Andern allgemeinsam –
Warum denn nicht wir?

Sieh den Berg gen Himmel streben,
Well’ in Welle sieh zerfließen;
Keiner Blume wird vergeben,
Wollte sie den Kelch verschließen;
Und der Himmel küsst die Erd’,
Und das Mondenlicht den Fluss –
Was sind all’ die Küsse werth,
Weigerst du den Kuss?
