Mond, hast du auch gesehen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG FRE
Das Mädchen spricht:
 Mond, hast du [auch]1 gesehen,
   Wie mich mein Schatz geküßt?
 Frei muß ich dir gestehen,
   Daß mich das sehr verdrießt.

Auch weiß ich nicht, wie eben
   Es gestern Abend kam,
 Ob ich [ihn ihm]2 gegeben,
Ob er den Kuß sich nahm.

 Du [mußt's]3 nicht weiter sagen,
   Ich bitte dich darum,
 Wenn dich die Leute fragen,
   O lieber Mond, sei stumm!

Moon thou did'st peep out slily
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Moon thou did'st peep out slily
As my lips my lover kissed
And I must own quite freely
   That I was sorely vexed.

 But now, this doubt distressed
   I cannot make it plain,
 Did he compel the kisses
Or was I too to blame.

But thou must not betray me
   If prying people come
And if they ask I pray thee
Oh moon, dear moon be dumb.
