Droben stehet die Kapelle, Schauet still ins Tal hinab, Drunten [singt]1 bei Wies' und Quelle Froh und hell der Hirtenknab'. Traurig tönt das Glöcklein nieder, Schauerlich der Leichenchor; Stille sind die frohen Lieder, Und der Knabe lauscht empor. Droben bringt man sie zu Grabe, Die sich freuten in dem Tal. Hirtenknabe, Hirtenknabe! Dir auch singt man dort einmal.

Daarboven staat de kapel, kijkt stil neer in 't dal, daaronder zingt bij veld en bron, blij en klaar de herdersjongen. Droevig klinkt het klokje neder, akelig het begrafeniskoor, verstomd zijn de vrolijke liedjes, en de jongen luistert omhoog. Daarboven draagt men hen ten grave, die vrolijk waren in het dal. Herdersjongen, herdersjongen, ook voor jou zingt men daar eenmaal.
