Surten les primeres flors de les prades verdes, i amb ulls d’infant ens esguarden com vedells a primavera. Amb roba verda de maig, ricament brodada de flors, per a la joia de la Pasqua, tots els arbres s’han ornat. Oh sacre temps de primavera! Tu asseques les llàgrimes silents que els anhels dels nostres cors han vessat en la pena més profunda. En molts cors hivernals ressonen també les teves campanes de festa, i molts gèrmens de joia es desperten a un goig novell.

Tenor solo: I mentre cantaven, senten una tendra, planyívola melodia. De sobte s’atura la dansa que amb garbull brogia i tots escolten el cant. La rosa: La primavera ha tornat, ha cridat: “Amunt, desperteu!” De què em serveix el floriment si el meu cor s’ha trencat d’anhel ardent? Quan les donzelles m’acaronin, quan elles cantin llurs cants d’amor, em planyo perquè per a nosaltres, pobres roses, no floreix mai una primavera d’amor! La reina dels elfs: Tu nècia criatura, desitges el goig de l’amor, feliç tu, que de les seves penes fins a aquesta primavera res n’has sabut. La rosa: Voldria suportar tot el dolor, em sento forta! La reina dels elfs: Tu, petita rosa, tu? Vols deixar el nostre reialme, on la pau i la benaurança regnen eternament? La rosa: Oh, deixa’m esdevenir una donzella. Deixa’m estimar com ho fan les donzelles! La reina dels elfs: Si tu, petita rosa, ho demanes, que sigui així! A la terra els homes esmenten les donzelles com imatge de roses; que la rosa esdevingui una donzella! I que així s’acompleixi aquesta sentència! I tu portaràs una rosa que serà la teva protecció! El qui la posseeixi participarà al més pur goig terrenal. Però ves amb compte, si mai la perds, llavors hauràs de deixar la vida! Tenor solo: Així cantaven i ja clareja, un ocell canta al matí que encara dorm, el món es desperta a un goig novell, a un nou dolor, a una nova pena. I com un llamp ha desaparegut l’airívol estol dels elfs, tan sols una llenca argentada a la prada palesa on havien estat. La formosa rosa-infant obre els seus ulls com si somiés encara. Un vent matinal fresc i perfumat li gita flors de pomer als seus cabells; una petita rosa, brillant a la llum del matí, floreix, molt significativa, al seu pit. La rosa: On sóc? És realitat o és un somni? No, no, no és cap encanteri; com donzella caminant per el món seré feliç gràcies a l’amor. Tenor solo: Ella puja tranquil•lament al tossal; allà, davant dels seus ulls s’estén l’àmplia vall resplendent envoltada de boscos. Ben aviat arriba a la porta de la primera casa, hi entra i demana gentilment aixopluc.

Tenor solo: Fou el primer dolor de la rosa! Cercant reconfort ella esguarda vers el cel; i sota la vermellor del capvespre la reina de les flors segueix el seu camí. Una modesta caseta solitària atrau ara el seu esguard. Adossada al cementiri, guarnida tot a l’entorn per lilàs; a través de la porta oberta es veu una creu i una làpida, transfigurades per la llum daurada del capvespre. Ella hi entra, allà hi ha un ancià vinclant el cap, blanc com l’argent, ell cava amb la pala a la mà, una fossa a la terra verda. La rosa: Per a qui és aquesta fossa, profunda i petita? L’enterrador: És per a la filla del nostre moliner. La rosa: Oh pobra germana, profunda condolença! L’enterrador: Una mort penosa, una mort dolorosa, morir d’un cor trencat. La rosa: Com haig d’interpretar les teves paraules? L’amor fidel comporta aquests sofriments? L’enterrador: A qui ferventment ha estimat i fou traït, li toca la sort de morir – només pot ser guarit del seu dolor a les entranyes maternals de la terra. La rosa: Oh germana, profunda condolença! Tenor solo: Ha rodolat al fons el darrer terròs, s’ha vessat la darrera llàgrima; i en silenci tornen a casa, els qui han acompanyat la filla del moliner a la tomba. L’enterrador també abandona aquell lloc, tan sols la donzella resta allà de genolls a la tomba. Al cel intensament blau ja brilla el daurat centelleig de les estrelles; la llum de la lluna sotja entre el fullatge dels til•lers com si volgués trobar quelcom estimat. La pelegrina s’aixeca i va vers la porta del cementiri. L’enterrador: Cap on vols anar, la nit s’esdevé humida. La rosa: L’esplendor de les estrelles m’il•lumina el camí de retorn. L’enterrador: Pensa-t’ho criatura, com si jo fos el teu pare: resta aquesta nit a la meva cabana, tot el poc que posseeixo serà teu, criatura. La rosa: Et dono les gràcies – amb un nou delit per la vida, les teves amicals paraules omplen el meu cor – et seguiré fins que apunti el matí, seré la teva hostessa, pare meu. L’enterrador: Veus, les parets són nues. La rosa: I aquella garlanda, allà amb una cinta blanca? L’enterrador: Això és el meu bé més preuat; la meva esposa que reposa allà fora, portava aquesta garlanda als seus cabells rossos quan esdevingué meva a l’altar. Però deixem reposar els morts, ara dormen en pau. Que Déu ens doni la custòdia dels àngels mentre dormim aquesta nit. La rosa: Que ells et protegeixin i a tota la bona gent! Tenor: I quan ha passat un any, la bella rosa besa tendrament el seu petit infant que reposa bressolat, per el goig de la seva mare, al seu pit, amb uns ulls blaus. Ell somriu i allarga les manetes, com si volgués abastar l’amor de la seva mare, ella però l’esguarda a través d’un vel de llàgrimes i ferventment, donant gràcies a Déu allà dalt, pren la rosa que la protegeix i la dóna a l’infant amb mans tremoloses. La rosa: Pren el meu talismà, tu petit cor, jo torno feliç a casa; he tingut el goig suprem de la terra, després d’aquest ja no n’hi ha cap altre; adéu, infant meu; -- tu, marit fidel, el meu pelegrinatge ha arribat a la seva fi, me’n vaig sense pena ni dolor, car m’acomiado en la joia.
