Auf geheimem Waldespfade

Auf geheimem Waldespfade
Schleich' ich gern im Abendschein
An das öde Schilfgestade,
Mädchen, und gedenke dein!

Wenn sich dann der Busch verdüstert,
Rauscht das Rohr geheimnisvoll,
Und es klaget und es flüstert,
Daß ich weinen, weinen soll.

Und ich mein', ich höre wehen
Leise deiner Stimme Klang,
Und im Weiher untergehen
Deinen lieblichen Gesang.

Secret footpaths through the woodlands
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Secret footpaths through the woodlands
take me in the evenfall
to the barren banks of rushes,
where my Dearest I recall.

As the forest darkens slowly
reeds will rustle secretly
with their soft laments, and whisper:
“You will always weep for me!”

And it seems I hear your voice then
drifting faintly through the air …
... disappearing in the waters
with your song so dear and fair.
