Schleich' ich gern im Abendschein
An das öde Schilfgestade,
Mädchen, und gedenke dein!

Wenn sich dann der Busch verdüstert,
Rauscht das Rohr geheimnisvoll,
Und es klaget und es flüstert,
Daß ich weinen, weinen soll.

Und ich mein', ich höre wehen
Leise deiner Stimme Klang,

Lungo un segreto sentiero nel bosco
amo avvicinarmi furtivo nella luce serale
alla sponda deserta dove cresce il canneto
e a te, fanciulla, volgo il mio pensiero!

Quando poi il cespuglio si fa più scuro,
le canne iniziano a stormire cariche di mistero,
sembrano gemere e sospirare, al punto
che non riesco a trattenere il pianto.

E mi sembra allora di udire
il lieve mormorio della tua voce,
e nello stagno sembra affondare
la tua soave canzone.
