Ein Jüngling liebt ein [Mädchen,]1
Die hat einen andern erwählt;
Der andre liebt eine andre,
Und hat sich mit dieser vermählt.

Das Mädchen [heiratet]2 aus Ärger
Den ersten besten Mann,
Der ihr in den Weg gelaufen;
Der Jüngling ist übel dran.

Es ist eine alte Geschichte,
Doch bleibt sie immer neu;
Und wem sie [just]3 passieret,
Dem bricht das Herz entzwei.

H. Engelmann sets stanza 3

Wil Jantje graag met Pietje
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)  after the German (Deutsch)
 Wil Jantje graag met Pietje
 Wil Pietje helaas liever Klaas
 Wil Klaas het graagst met Marietje
 Maar Rietje helaas niet met Klaas.

 Mijn muze laat mij lopen
 En neemt gewoon een man
 Aan wie ze zich kan verkopen
 En nu is ze boven Jan...

 Versteld zal ze staan van mijn liedjes
 Maar sneu voor mij privé
 Waarom telt in de liefde
 Nooit een plus een is twee!
